Claude's uncle Fred was an important part of Munich's queer community in the 1980s, as his bar, Fred's Pub, was a haven for queer people. But when a new virus suddenly arrived in Germany, Fred fell ill and died of AIDS in 1998. Now his nephew is searching for answers. Claude asks himself: Who was my uncle really, and how did the AIDS crisis change his life? Y-History reporter Phillip Syvarth, himself a Munich resident, accompanies Claude on this moving search for clues that goes beyond Uncle Fred's fate.
At the Schwabing Hospital in Munich, reporter Phillip learns about the difficult conditions under which pioneering physician Hans Jäger treated the first AIDS patients—without medication or research funds, but with empathy and courage. At Munich's queer archive, Sabrina Bernd not only helps in the search for answers about Uncle Fred, but also shares her own memories of how the vibrant queer scene suddenly changed when AIDS arrived and how quickly she lost her first girlfriend.
The search for clues leads to the CSD in Nuremberg and old archive recordings, where the political dimension of the AIDS crisis becomes clear: Peter Gauweiler's desire for mandatory reporting in Bavaria and the catalog of measures that spread fear and terror among HIV-positive people, while the then Minister of Health, Rita Süßmuth, called for education and solidarity. The research shows how the queer generation had to fight hard for acceptance and rights – achievements that still have an impact today.
In the end, Claude comes face to face with an old friend of Uncle Fred's – but can he really provide answers? “Y-History: AIDS, The Eighties and My Uncle Fred” sheds light on personal destinies, political struggles and the unwavering solidarity of the community on World AIDS Day. A journey into the past that shows who prevailed and what traces the 1980s have left behind to this day. Available from December 1, 2025, in the ARD media library.
